Artichoke Fail!

This 17 day diet is all about the vegetables. So I thought I'd try artichokes. Yeah, I tried to steam it and it didn't turn out so well. Artichoke fail! It reminded me of the leaves on a magnolia tree. So anyone know how to cook an artichoke or what I did wrong?
