Lactose Intolerance: what to look for, what to eat/drink!

This is a guest post by my friend Nancy Ortiz. She blogs over at thefrugaldietitian.com. This article is great information for my family. My son and I both suffer from being lactose intolerant. Thank you Nancy!

Lactose intolerance is NOT a food allergy even though it is commonly referred as one. Lactose,
a sugar, is found naturally in animal milk (humans, too). If you look on a food label you will
see sugar listed in grams. The average 12 grams of sugar, listed on an 8 ounce serving of regular
milk, is from lactose.

Lactose consists of 2 sugars "joined" together - glucose and galactose. The body produces the
enzyme lactase, which breaks those 2 sugars apart in the small intestine. After age 2, many
people (most commonly Asian, African, and Native American populations) will have a decrease
in the production of lactase. After a large intake of dairy products, in a short period of time,
these individuals may experience gas, abdominal pain and even diarrhea. The gas increase is
caused by the bacteria in the large intestine "feeding" on the lactose. In more severe cases,
because of the presence of lactose, water may be "pulled" into the large intestine thus causing
diarrhea.

Most people, with lactose intolerance (many are still making some lactase), can tolerate
moderate amounts of lactose in their diet without any problems. Most studies show that up to
8 ounces of milk (or its equivalent in lactose content) can be tolerated at one meal. It is usually
tolerated better when it is taken with other foods, as opposed by itself.

1) Try Lactose-free milk, cheese or ice cream. The lactose has already been reduced by lactase
by the manufacturer. These products may taste sweeter because the sugars, glucose and
galactose, are sweeter apart then when they are "together".

2) Product and Lactose Content in grams (note serving sizes - amounts vary):
Milk (whole, 2%, 1%, Skim Milk) (8 oz cup) 12.47 grams
Yogurt (plain) (6 oz) 6 grams
Cottage Cheese, low fat, 2% milk fat (4 oz) 3.28 grams
Ice Cream (4 oz scoop= 1/2 cup) 2.92 grams
American Cheese, pasteurized, processed (1 oz - approx. 1 slice) 1.53 grams
Cream Cheese (1 oz) 0.91 grams
Sour Cream (1 Tbsp) 0.42 grams
Buttermilk Salad Dressing (lite) (2 Tbsp) 0.31 grams
Cheddar Cheese, sharp (1 oz) 0.07 grams
Swiss Cheese or Mozzarella (1 oz) 0.02 grams

Inexpensive things to do with your dog

Our dogs are our family members aren't they? Here's 5 inexpensive things you can do with your best friend.

1. Go on long walks. Me and my pup love to walk to get some exercise in. He loves it and it forces me to exercise. It's a win/win.

2. Play with them. Our dogs love it when we spend time with them. It's so easy to grab one of their favorite toys and simply get in the floor and play! Makes us younger which is a great side benefit.

3. Take them on doggy play dates. Get your friends together and let the dogs play in the back yard. They love friends of their own.

4. Take them to the dog park. I have one in my town and have never been there! I have to take him I know he would love it.

5. Go for a drive. I take my pup on all my errands. It gets him out of the house and we get to spend time together.

What do you like to do with your dog? My dogs definitely keep me young and keep me company!

Redoing our kitchen the debt free way! AKA Delayed Gratification

Our house is 26 years old. Let that sink in for a minute. That's a long time to have the same countertops. I really want new ones! I refuse to go into debt to get them though. So we are saving up and hopefully will have the $3000 saved by the end of the year. Yep, you read that right! We are doing the countertops (kitchen and bath), sinks and faucets. I am so ready for a new look.

This week we are purchasing new sinks and faucets with the little bit we've already saved up. We've slowly been trying to update our house and I think it looks 6000% better. But we have got to get new granite countertops. I know it's not a need it's a want and not necessary in life. But it will make me feel better cooking in my kitchen which I do daily...multiple times per day for this family of  5, one is a teen, a tween, a 6 year old and a hard working husband that needs a good meal when he gets home..

Here's some things we're doing to save the money. I had a friend ask me to take my daughter and myself to get pedicures. I wanted to go. But I want those countertops more. So I moved the $ I would have spent on the pedicures into a savings account and that is going towards our new countertops! Then my daughter and I did our own toes.

My blogging money is going to the same place. My dh has even taken on a few side jobs to put towards it. I can't wait to post pics of our new countertops. Remember about 2 months ago we got some restore stain and put it on our cabinets. They look brand new again. It's the little things that make me happy. The main one being debt free! I can't wait til my home is paid for! That's my brand new BMW of choice.

My garden needs some Miracle Gro Expand 'n Gro

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Scotts® for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

EnG Product Shot.png

I've read that Expand ‘n Gro™ grabs the water and keeps it in the plant. When you use the Expand 'n Gro it holds in 50% more water than if you didn't use it. I love my garden and being able to harvest vegetables myself. I have already planted lettuce, kale, turnip greens and a pink blueberry bush. Here's to having bigger better vegetables and fruits this year.  I will be using this for helping my berries and plants hold on to more water, especially in the hot, dry August heat. It's good for your indoor or your outdoor plants. Either would benefit from using the Expand 'n Gro.

How does it keep in so much more water? It is made from natural ingredients from the coconut husk. It uses part of the coconut that was previously just thrown out. That's a great way to reuse an item, isn't it? The coconut husk turned into the Expand 'n Gro will be used for a few years. It's not gone after the first growing season. It is a slow to decompose product that will benefit your garden for years to come.

I can't wait to see if my veggies produce three times more than last year. I'll take pictures so you can see their progress. More beautiful blooms on my flowers and roses would be another benefit. Leave me a comment telling me what crop you will use this on and I'll pick one person (via random.org) for Miracle Gro Expand 'n Gro to send a sample to.

Sick of Sneezing? SinuSense can help.

You can tell we've had a very mild winter. My poor hubby has been blowing his nose nonstop for the last three weeks. He's used the neti pot to try to help his sinuses and lots of tissues. It does help some. The first time he used the SinuSense he was blown away by how much it helped his breathing and it lessened how much he had to blow his nose. He loved that he didn't feel like he was drowning and that he can stand up instead of leaning over like with the netipot. Drowning is how you sometimes can feel when you use the pots to pour water in your nose.

When your sinuses are blocked it's hard to get the water to run through. Not with the SinuCleanse. It pushes the water into your sinuses and pulsates it. After my dh was finished using it the second day he felt like he had a much needed massage on his sinuses. I really can't tell you how nice it is to have my normal hubby back. Thank you SinuSense for cleaning him out and helping him breathe better. Just a little saline and his SinuSense is all he needs now.

We have done many things to help alleviate his sinuses. I love to line dry my clothes and now is not the time because of his allergies. I've had to close the windows too. I love having my windows open and it's been hot enough this year. Do you have other tips for lessening allergies during the spring?

Here's some ways to keep in touch with SinuSense. They are offering coupons for my readers.

I hope this helps someone out there like my husband who needed to feel like a human again and with his allergies that wasn't likely. Thankfully now he's back and normal, well as normal as he can be!

I was given a SinuSense for use and was compensated for this post. However, all views and feedback are 100% honest and my own.

Waterpik give up your harsh flossing for gentle cleaning!

I was fortunate to receive a Waterpik for review. I am constantly flossing my teeth. As soon as I eat...especially meat...I have to floss. I was so excited to try this water flosser and see if it left my gums and teeth feeling as clean and fresh. Here is my experience with it.

  1. It was easy to get out of the box and set up.
  2. Mine did leak at the bottom at first but that was user error and I was quickly able to fix it.
  3. I had it set up and was using it in under 5 minutes.
  4. It worked gently on my gums and yet I felt like, after I adjusted the pressure, that I was getting them clean.
  5. It comes with many different attachments that you can use to clean your tongue, brush your teeth, plaque pik, orthodontic tip and the classic jet tip.

Some benefits of using the Water Flosser by Waterpik

  • Reduces bacteria in your mouth.
  • Stimulates gums and increases blood flow
  • Keeps gums strong and healthy
  • Great for people who have implants or bridges
  • Leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean!
After using this for a few days I am convinced that it works and works well. You will probably have to adjust your flow to find the correct stream for you. But once you do you will love the WaterPik Waterflosser.

I was given a waterpik flosser to use and was compensated for this post. However all views and opinions are 100% my own experience with the product.
