Author Interview Questions Dating 911
Introducting Kathleen Grieve!
1. How long have you been writing stories?
Since the Spring of 2006
2.How long after you started writing did it take you to get published?
I received my first contract for The Doctor’s Deception in December, 2007.
3.Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
While I’m driving. I know it sounds completely nuts
4.If you could have any other job what would it be and why?
I’m drawing a complete blank. I really love what I do and can’t imagine doing
anything else.
5.Do your friends read your works and give you guidance or do you just write it and submit? Yes! They do read my books and suggest themes etc…but don’t really get too in depth.
6.How did you get past the first rejection letter? (assuming you even got one! :) )Well, I realized something must’ve been wrong with my story. So I rolled up mysleeves and got to work! I figured out I needed a critique group to help me “learn” to write.
7.How much (length of time) research do you have to put into your novels?
Hardly any. Since I write in the genre that I live, eat, and breathe in 60 hours/week, I have a vast knowledge of what my characters are involved in on a daily basis. For Dating 911, my friends dad is a retired Fireman and I was able to pick his brain for details about my hero and what he would encounter.
8.Is your spouse (or significant other) supportive of your writing?
Yes! He is absolutely wonderful. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in life.
9.How long does it take you to write a book?
Well, I’m a pantser—which means I fly by the seat of my pants. I can’t plot to save my life! I usually see the beginning and I know how it needs to end, but the middle slows me down. I will write a chapter, polish it, then put it to bed until my muse tells me what’s next. Sometimes that may not be for a week or two down the road. I have been working on multiple projects at once, so while my characters in one book are demanding my attention, the others are quite content to wait their turn. I envy those writers that can write a couple of thousand words a day.
10.What tips do you have for other struggling writers?
Learn to write! And by that, I mean learn the rules about active/passive writing and show vs. tell. Lots of writers out there have wonderful imaginations but when they put that on paper, it doesn’t translate into a publishable book unless the writing is active.
